Photojournalism Assignment

The first image that I’ve chosen to write about is about the tragedy that is happening in Australia. The sky is glowing red as the bushfires continue in Mallacoota, Victoria, Australia. The photo was by someone that lives in Australia and I couldn’t find anything about them other than they’re a freelance photographer. I found the photo on (https://www.reuters.com/news/picture/three-people-feared-dead-in-australian-b-idUSKBN1YZ03B) Reuters, where it talks about how three people died as of result of the fires. The date the photo was published was December 31, 2019. The story behind the photograph is about the deadly fires that are currently still going on for the past month in Australia and how it has claimed the lives of people and the animal surrounding the entire country. The news value of the image is to raise awareness of the conflict that the country is currently going through and how it will have a lasting impact on the country because they’ll be repairing the country for decades afterwards as of result. The photographer used a long-shot of a street within the city of Mallacoota. It has a dramatic look to it because it literally looks like they’re in the depths of hell because of the skies red look to it.

The second image that I’ve chosen to write about is of Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong on the moon and one of the first images documented from the moon. The subject of the photo is to document the first trip to the moon by Aldrin and Armstrong. The photographer for the photo is Neil Armstrong but he’s in the photo as well in the reflection of Buzz Aldrin’s helmet. They intended to do this because they both wanted to be in the picture. I found the photo on Forbes.com (https://www.forbes.com/sites/kionasmith/2019/07/20/this-is-the-only-photo-of-neil-armstrong-on-the-moon/#16ad60c07af0). The photo was first taken in 1969. The photo was taken to document the landing on the moon by the United States. The photo had huge prominence because it was a picture of U.S. astronauts on the moon and at the time of the photo people didn’t believe that we could travel into space and this photo gave them belief and hope for the future. I believe Neil Armstrong used a combination of close-up and long shot for the photo because he wanted to get a close-up so that he would be in the picture but he also wanted to get a long shot to show the surfaces on the moon.

The third image that I’ve chosen to write about is about Kobe Bryant’s last NBA game on October 28, 2015. I wanted to write about this because Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash alongside his daughter, GiGi, and seven other passengers. The subject of the photo is to document the ceremonies for Kobe’s last game and it shows his legendary highlights as a Los Angeles Laker. I found the picture on (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2703415-kobe-bryants-last-game-from-the-players-reporters-and-coaches-who-were-there)  Bleacher Report. The photographer is Mark J. Terrill of the Associated Press. He has been working for AP for several years as a photojournalist and does local Los Angeles stories. The published date on the photo is October 28, 2015. The story behind the photo is to document the opening ceremonies of Kobe Bryant’s last game in his Hall of Fame career as a Los Angeles Laker. The photo has prominence because Kobe Bryant is one of the best basketball players to ever live and many consider him as the Greatest of All Time alongside Michael Jordan and LeBron James. Mr. Terrill used long-shot to show the magnitude of the crowd size and the size of the image-projector in the middle of the court.

In my fourth and final image, I’ve chosen to write about the deforestation in the Amazon in Brazil. The fires started in January and finally stopped in October. The subject of the photo is to document the tragic situation that happened to the beautiful Amazon. Tommasso Protti was the award-winning photographer that went down to Brazil to document the damage from the fire and deforestation from illegal logging. I found the photo from The Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/photography/2019/12/23/darkly-poetic-photos-show-what-life-is-like-brazilian-amazon/) and the publication was on December 23, 2019. The controversy around why the photo was taken was that companies were illegally deforesting the Amazon, which caused the fires which led to the damage that it suffered from January to October. The image had a lot of prominence to it because it showed people across the world what was taking place and hopefully led to some punishment for the people involved in the deforestation. The photographer used a long-shot photo from a helicopter.
