My name is Dylan Gilreath, I’m in 3rd bi-term year at the University of the Cumberland’s. I’m from McCreary County, Kentucky and my current major is Bachelor of Science General Studies. The most interesting thing about me is that I’m very good at video games and once was considered a “Professional Gamer” at one point and went to many tournaments and won a couple as well. The games that I won tournaments at were Halo and NBA2K. The most important lesson that I’ve learned throughout my life is to always be kind to people because you never know what they may be going through and by giving a simple “How are you?” to someone could mean the world to them. I believe that this article relates to me because I’ve made some of my best friends through video games and I understand that sometimes people who play video games get a reputation for being a “loner” but I think that myth is starting to get busted and this article talks about that. (Selk, Avi, and Emily Guskin. “The Myth of the Lonely Video Gamer Playing in Solitude Is Dead.” Chicagotribune.com, 9 Mar. 2018, http://www.chicagotribune.com/lifestyles/ct-video-gaming-friends-20180309-story.html.) I’m taking this course because I’m interested in getting into Mixed Martial Arts journalism because one guy has inspired me to do the kind of work that he does. His name is Luke Thomas and he’s one of the top MMA journalists in the game right now. My education goals are half-way done but as soon as I get my current degree that I sought. I want to get my Masters from here as well. I’m not in any current campus or community organizations but I would definitely be open to an opportunity if it were the right situation. The thing that I am most proud of is that I made my parents proud of me from all the accomplishments that I have had in my life so far and my goal is to keep that up because I value making them happy. The quote that I like the most is one that I ran across recently and its from Abraham Lincoln. He says “You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.” and I like it because its the truth. It’s better to face your responsibilities head on instead of putting them off for later. I would like to be in 10 years would be to hopefully have a sustainable job within MMA journalism or within coaching/teaching because those are the 3 passions that I carry but who know that may change in 10 years, honestly.
